What is Code Clock Academy?

Code Clock Academy is a weekly coding and Computer Science programme for children and young people in Belfast, designed to help students develop their technology skills through practical, creative projects. Students learn by creating. Depending on their age and experience, they might design a computer game, write a Python program, program a robot, develop an application or use physical computing to bring their ideas to life.

Rather than completing disconnected coding activities, Academy students have the opportunity to develop their skills over time through the Code Clock Academy Progression Pathway. Complete beginners are welcome, while students with previous coding experience can progress towards increasingly challenging programming and software development projects.

Junior Academy | Ages 7–11

The Code Clock Junior Academy introduces children to coding through fun, creative and practical projects.

Students explore Scratch, Microsoft MakeCode, micro, robotics, game development and introductory programming, learning important Computer Science concepts while creating games, animations, programs and interactive technology projects.

Activities develop logical thinking, creativity, problem-solving and confidence while providing a foundation for progression into more advanced programming.

Saturdays | 2:30pm–3:30pm

Code Clock Senior Academy hosted in Belfast, Northern Ireland

Senior Academy | Ages 11–16

The Code Clock Senior Academy is designed for young people who want to take their coding and Computer Science skills further.

Students develop increasingly sophisticated projects using technologies such as Python, C#, game development, robotics, physical computing and web technologies.

Along the way they develop their understanding of programming concepts including algorithms, variables, selection, iteration, functions, data structures, object-oriented programming and software design.

Students learn by building real projects, solving problems and developing the confidence to turn their own ideas into working software.

Saturdays | 3:45pm–4:45pm

What will your child learn?

Students learn how computer programs work and how to turn their ideas into working software.

They develop an understanding of fundamental programming concepts including variables, selection, iteration, functions and algorithms while learning how to plan, write, test and debug their own programs.

Coding is only one part of Computer Science.

Academy students develop broader skills in computational thinking, algorithms, decomposition, logical reasoning, debugging, software design and problem solving.

These skills help students understand not simply how to write code, but how to approach and solve complex problems.

Computer games provide an exciting environment in which to learn programming.

Students design and develop their own games while exploring concepts such as variables, scoring systems, events, movement, collision detection, selection, iteration and game logic.

The emphasis is on understanding the programming behind the game rather than simply playing it.

Technologies such as the BBC Microbit allow students to connect software with physical devices.

Students can create interactive projects using sensors, buttons, displays and other components while developing their understanding of how computer systems interact with the world around them.

As students progress, they have opportunities to work with Python, one of the world's most widely used programming languages.

Python provides an excellent route from introductory coding into text-based programming and allows students to create increasingly sophisticated applications, games and programming projects.

Students discover how programming can control objects in the physical world.

Through robotics projects and challenges, they explore concepts such as sensors, motors, control systems, algorithms and autonomous behaviour while developing logical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Progression pathway

A Coding Pathway That Grows With Your Child

Code Clock Academy provides a structured pathway through which students can progress from their first coding experiences towards advanced programming and independent software development.
Progress is based on demonstrated skills, completed projects, problem-solving and increasing independence rather than simply attendance.
This allows beginners and experienced young programmers to work towards meaningful milestones while building a portfolio of coding and technology projects.

Why Code Clock?

Coding Education Built on Experience

Code Clock has been helping children and young people discover coding, programming and Computer Science for more than a decade. Through our established coding programmes, summer schools and technology workshops, young people have had the opportunity to explore everything from their first lines of code to Python programming, robotics, game development and more advanced software projects.

Our approach combines experienced teaching with practical, project-based learning. We believe young people learn technology best when they are given the skills, support and freedom to create something themselves. Code Clock Academy brings that experience into a regular weekly programme, allowing young people to continue developing their coding and Computer Science skills throughout the year.

Frequently Asked Questions

What age is Code Clock Academy for?

Code Clock Academy is designed for children and young people aged 7–16.

Junior Academy is for ages 7–11, while Senior Academy is for ages 11–16.

Does my child need previous coding experience?

No.

Complete beginners are welcome at Code Clock Academy.

Students who already have coding or programming experience can work on more challenging projects and progress through the Code Clock Academy Progression Pathway at an appropriate level.

What programming languages will my child learn?

The technologies students use depend on their age, experience and the projects they are completing.

These can include Scratch, Microsoft MakeCode, Python and C#, alongside robotics, game development and physical computing technologies.

Will my child learn Python?

Yes.

Python forms an important part of the Code Clock Academy pathway, particularly as students progress from visual coding environments towards text-based programming.

Students can use Python to develop games, applications and increasingly sophisticated programming projects.

Is Code Clock Academy suitable for children who already know how to code?

Yes.

The Academy is designed to accommodate different levels of experience.

Students who already have programming experience can progress towards more advanced challenges rather than having to continually repeat introductory coding activities.

What is the difference between Junior and Senior Academy?

Junior Academy provides a creative introduction to coding and Computer Science for children aged 7–11.

Senior Academy is designed for ages 11–16 and places greater emphasis on text-based programming, software development and increasingly sophisticated Computer Science projects.

Where is Code Clock Academy held?

Code Clock Academy is held at Breda Academy in Belfast.

When does Code Clock Academy run?

Academy sessions take place on Saturdays.

Junior Academy: 2:30pm–3:30pm

Senior Academy: 3:45pm–4:45pm

Does my child need to bring a computer?

No. Students will have access to the computing facilities and equipment required for their Academy projects.

What will my child actually make?

Projects vary throughout the Academy and according to the student's level.

Students might develop computer games, Python applications, robotics challenges, micro projects, interactive programs and other software and technology projects.

How does the Code Clock Academy Progression Pathway work?

Students progress through a series of Code Clock Academy levels.

Progress is based on the skills students demonstrate, the projects they complete and their increasing ability to design, program, test and debug solutions independently.

This allows students to develop at an appropriate pace rather than progression being based simply on attendance.

How do I join Code Clock Academy?

Choose the appropriate Junior or Senior Academy programme and complete the online registration process.

Places are limited to ensure students receive appropriate support during each session.
